What to Do When a Fracture Happens
Apr 22, 2024 by Dr. Avinash
Fractures can happen at home, at work or during sports. Quick and correct first aid can reduce complications and pain.
Immediate first-aid steps
- Keep the injured limb still. Do not try to “set” the bone.
- Apply a cold pack wrapped in cloth to reduce swelling.
- If bleeding, apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth.
- Remove rings/watches near the injury to avoid tightness from swelling.
What to avoid
- Avoid massage or forceful movement.
- Do not give food/drink if surgery might be needed.
- Don’t delay care if there is severe pain, deformity or numbness.
At the hospital
